This student housing project addresses the challenge of integrating 1,000 new dwelling units in front of an existing 1970s tower block. By reimagining the spaces between the buildings, it enhances the social fabric of the campus community.

Key challenges the project addressed include:

  1. Enhancing legibility and identity: The public realm design ensures a clear and welcoming arrival experience, particularly for first-time visitors. Large benches and canopies extend from the existing front door to the street, playing a crucial role in this effort.

  2. Creating social moments: The project establishes gathering areas, including a lawn and various seating options, to foster social interaction.

  3. Addressing technical grading challenges: Complex site grading issues were resolved without the need for stairs or ramps, ensuring the site remains fully accessible.

  4. Implementing stormwater management: Rain gardens were integrated into the design to effectively manage stormwater.

Dustin Dilts played a pivotal role in the design and implementation of this project, working closely with the principal in charge during the conceptual design phase. He led the development of construction drawings and specifications, ensuring that this complex landscape project was delivered with meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to creating an exceptional outcome.

Detailed modeling of grading and furnishings was conducted during the construction drawing development to anticipate and address potential issues.

Ensuring a positive experience of the site at all times of the day was a key consideration in the development of the on-site lighting design.

The canopies designed by Kai Hotson incorporate artwork by coast salish artist Kelly Cannell, adding a unique and artistic dimension to the space.
